ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book draws on a variety of contributors with a broad range of expertise. It explores the recursive and iterative nature of development and practice and as such English Teachers will find that themes and ideas are revisited across chapters. The growing significance of the role of mentors in supporting beginning teachers in England is reflected in the publication in 2016 of mentoring standards, which provide guidance and support for those engaging in mentoring. The profile of mentors in supporting the development of beginning teachers is rising. English Teachers will likely refine the suggestions offered to suit the particular circumstances of each beginning teacher with whom they work and adapt these to their own specific situation.
