ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses N. Jackson’s ideas and R. Barnett’s perspectives on life-wide learning and examines them specifically to enhancing teachers' teaching, as part of a career-wide approach to development. Teacher's profile and reputation will be enhanced and they will have opportunities to grow their career in a number of different directions. Taking a career-wide approach, and looking around teachers rather than always upwards can provide interest and opportunities that they might not have anticipated; which may in turn lead to developing expertise and career advancement. The journal set out to offer an opportunity for those involved in University learning and teaching to publish accounts of scholarly practice or small-scale practitioner research and case studies, with a focus on enhancement of student learning. Engaging in any of the different activities will shape how teachers ‘are’ as a professional – their identity as teacher and learner and colleague.
