ABSTRACT

A responsibility for teaching can easily become a maintenance function rather than an occasion for leadership. Teaching is typically based around local, collegial contexts that are defined on the basis of disciplinary expertise. Taking a lead in teaching can take many forms, from leading teaching activities to mentoring junior colleagues. Taking on a role that allows teachers to lead the development of teaching within teacher's institution, however, can increase teacher's scope to initiate change. Teaching seminars does not require postgraduate tutors to prepare teaching materials or contribute to the module development; their role is to deliver seminars. Teaching offers immense scope for exercising leadership in proposing and implementing new ideas, drawing colleagues into the process and seeing the difference that teacher's work can make for students. Leadership responsibilities can come at module, programme, departmental, school, faculty or university level.
