ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides an overview of the four major outer voices – heartfelt, command, prosocial, and futurizing. It presents the outer voice hierarchy with a case study of a leader trying to create a grand vision who fails in spectacular fashion. The book explores what happens when a leader violates the central tenet of the leadership differential and uses a higher differential in the absence of the lower differentials. It explores the dark side – when effective leadership is used irresponsibly or even for evil. To fulfil its intention as a meta-model, it is essential that the differential voice encompasses leadership within complex social systems, a major stream of academic study of organisations.
