ABSTRACT

This chapter is a review of the core features of gambling harm minimisation practices. These include examining the effectiveness of educational, public and problem gambling awareness campaigns, specific gambling policy initiatives (i.e., gambling availability, venues, activities and participation) and aspects of gambling delivery (i.e., gambling parameters, pre-commitment, staff training and the gambling environment). Although these are prominent features, there are others that also influence harm minimisation, and for a full discussion please read the Williams, West, and Simpson (2012) report. Nevertheless, this chapter summarises the existing harm minimisation literature, indicating areas of success and caveats for policymakers. Consequently, effective policy will require a sensitive understanding of the mechanisms of each harm minimisation feature and the necessity for government regulation and policing.
