ABSTRACT

National inquiries into the teaching of reading have often come up with useful recommendations, but implementation has been slow. One of the factors in the ineffectiveness of inquiry recommendations is active opposition. To counter the spread of misinformation, several individuals and organisations have set up hubs of knowledge, including blog sites, electronic mailing lists, Facebook pages and web pages. There are dozens of dyslexia support pages on Facebook, but only a handful are committed to providing evidence-based support. The chapter provides a snapshot of some outstanding for-profit organisations that also engage in activism. Thinking Reading challenges government policy and works with like-minded organisations to bring about better quality reading instruction in the UK. The aim of the International Foundation for Effective Reading Instruction is to contribute to raising standards of literacy in the English language based on robust research and high quality instruction in the teaching of reading, spelling and writing.
