ABSTRACT

Some of the learners consulted were reflecting on their own experiences of leading seminars and conducting peer tutoring and seeing the relationships between teaching and learning for themselves. Their empathy with their teachers and understanding of the challenges they face was very evident in many of comments too. Allows for personality dependent and tailored teaching, enabling a tutor to take a number of different teaching styles and enhancing a learner’s learning simultaneously. Understanding of basic ideas is achieved on an individual basis that is not available in lecture based teaching. There is a lot of pressure to perform well in seminars and generate meaningful discussions. Creating an uncomfortable atmosphere and a limitation on debates and on the lecturer’s lesson plan. There can be an uneven spread of learning opportunity, some tutors are much more skilled at engaging with learners than others.
