ABSTRACT

This chapter presents specific practical attention to the needs of the following groups of learners in small group teaching (SGT). There are: multi-disciplinary and mixed ability groups, international learners and learners for whom English is not a first language, mature learners, ‘new learners’ entering further education and higher education through access routes and foundation degree programmes, and disabled learners. In a group of learners where some have more knowledge and more confidence it can be very difficult to create an environment where all learners feel comfortable to share. Working in English can mean some international learners face an extra level of complexity when they try to take a full and active role in SGT sessions. As with SGT with learners from mixed ability and backgrounds, SGT made up of international learners is incredibly rewarding and beneficial to all. Checking that learners understand the tutor and understand each other is one of the most important things that the tutor can do.
