ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 considers the plethora of problems which help to bury our wonder at nature. This includes the problems of: dualisms; problems with reality; the separation of art and science; the schism between ecology and economy; the problem of greed; the trial of a child going through puberty; society’s failure to discuss values; the problem of the media and mass communication; and the problem that Western society is now more divorced from nature than ever before. There is also the problem that our society attacks the idea that nature is (or can be) sacred, with some arguing that the idea is ‘rubbish’. The chapter concludes that the problems that bury wonder are extensive and will not be changed overnight – but that they can be changed.
