ABSTRACT

In order for teachers in schools to have a realistic appraisal of what the support services can provide, it is important to have some basic knowledge about them. Educational psychologists have a training in both psychology and education. Over the past 10 to 15 years, educational psychologists have increased in number but their workload has also expanded. Within a secondary school it is now common for a number of teachers to have posts of responsibility in the area of pastoral care. Education Welfare Officers are another group whose role has changed, or perhaps begun to change. Most social workers who are relevant to this discussion are employed by the local authority's Social Services Departments, or by a few bodies such as the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. One theme running through the previous section was the need for collaboration among professionals.
