ABSTRACT

In the survey of learning disabilities and their remediation one theme is dominant. There are many types of reading problem or spelling problem. The classification of learning disabilities in each of the specified areas is given only tentatively. Research into learning disabilities has not yet reached the point where categorical classifications are given. It follows that many of the remedial techniques that are advised are based on scanty knowledge. A model of learning disabilities helps to think more clearly, that is, the clinical model of the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities. According to Humphreys cognitive psychology attempts to answer specific questions, like 'what processes is needed to go through in order to perform a certain task'. Whenever the specific learning difficulties are observed in a child, it is necessary to analyse the processes involved in a given task quite carefully. The introduction of cognitive psychology into this field serves to legitimise certain classifications and techniques.
