ABSTRACT

Apparently, one of the characteristic features of the new West African elite is its attitude towards matrimony and matrimonial relationships. It is equally significant that the ideas of the Africans approximate closely European ideals of marriage as represented by a broadly comparable sample of British students. The only real difference is that the solidarity of husband and wife as a conjugal group is apparently less marked in the African case. The British young men and women, particularly the girls, are further advanced in education than the Africans. Evidently the desire for a home of their own is very strong among both British students and Africans. In the case, however, of the African group this apparent separation from relatives is not correlated with an equally strong allegiance to the spouse's point of view in opposition to them.
