ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study which shows that editing is not simply about pulling apart, or letting things emerge, but preserving what is there. The role of editor in this case study may be viewed as somewhat protective, seeing things that the writer simply could not, and making them visible, or invisible as the case may be. This case presents a challenge in that several different drafts that went back and forth between the author and the editor each contain different sets of edits. The revisions ultimately come from Passaro himself, Drew's job being more to ask new drafts to step into the room of their own accord rather than insist they look a particular way. In this case, the cohesion extends to the relationship between editor and writer, not just the narrative itself, and reminds us why this previously routine aspect of the path to publication remains so important even when the option to bypass it exists.
