ABSTRACT

The authenticity tourist can and will depart the rainforest, leaving behind his tourist dollars and those irrepressibly authentic Africans twittering their gleeful songs on their kalimbas. The tourist who clings desperately to the latter might console himself briefly with the idea that authenticity is a man-made concept. Specifically, the ending is clearly more problematic, particularly in regard to the Authenticity quiz, which does not feature in the published version, although there is a real sense of the fondness for it throughout both the correspondence and the draft trail. The alternative ending returns to the Sceniscender of Katoomba and concludes on these lines: Resisting it all pausing for a moment at a set of statues of three frolicking aboriginals, a man and two women, playing some kind of game that looks like Frisbee, expressions of glee unmistakable on their bronze faces.
