ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the technical topics covered in the main part of the book by showing how they are used in a number of accelerators. CERN and the Large Hadron Collider are the topic of the first section, followed by sections of the European Spallation Source and the Linac Coherent Light Source, the first x-ray free-electron laser. The synchrotron light source Max-IV and the Tandem accelerator laboratory in Uppsala are discussed in the following sections, before giving a brief overview of accelerators for medical applications, both for therapy and diagnostic purposes, and for industrial applications, ranging from ion implanters used in the semiconductor industry to neutron generators, used in prospecting oil.
