ABSTRACT

Children who have nonconforming gender identities and expressions or who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning/queer (LGBTQ) are common targets of bullying and harassment. This chapter explores the voices of a parent, a school principal, a school counsellor and a professional development consultant in the process of working together with teaching staff to welcome and integrate a gender nonconforming child into a neighbourhood primary school in the United States. It focuses on unique collective and individual narratives and honest depiction of the conversations, decisions and concrete actions that are involved in embedding meaningful and sustainable inclusion. The chapter describes the child's mother, who is also a teacher educator. The authors document and reflect on the work done over five years to transform the school into a welcoming and inclusive place for gender nonconforming and transgender children.
