ABSTRACT

The visionary idea of a “total museum” described by Jorge Wagensberg has inspired contemporary museography in many ways, whilst the notion of “museum” has increasingly called for new and more active forms of engagement. The term post-disciplinary museum ultimately describes institutions that actively explore new ways to communicate, engage and produce knowledge. In a world where emotions seem to rule over facts, numerous science engagement institutions have taken it upon themselves to “protect” the image of neutrality, objectivity and universality of science. Yet the emotional power of art must be considered not only for its positive but also for its more challenging aspects, which is the reason why many science museums still make a “safe” use of artists as external suppliers rather than involving them more deeply in their everyday practice.
