ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 examines the nationalistic re-militarisation of Denmark post-2000 and how this is narrated through Danish war films. A number of films have been released which deal with the recent engagement in Afghanistan and revisit the military and civil resistance to the German occupation during the Second World War. The chapter maps out the post-2000 dramatic transformation of the international Danish position from a peace-promoting nation seeking to de-escalate war threats (a position governing Danish foreign and defence policies until the 1980s), to becoming a hawk nation, not only supporting but advocating international intervention in the Middle East and northern Africa. The chapter explores how this dramatic change reflects an altered Danish perception of global interventionism from the emphasis on development aid and conflict de-escalation of the previous decades.
