ABSTRACT

A Memoir of the Future was an attempt to transmit Wilfred R. Bion’s ideas in a lively way that would have the potential to provoke change. Like A Memoir of the Future, the lectures and seminars illustrate his peculiar approach, showing reversal of perspective, binocular vision, awe for the unconscious and the unknown and an attitude of radical not-knowing. The chapter highlights themes and patterns that run through the different lectures. Bion cultivated ignorance as a fundamental characteristic, which he often called abysmal. Bion downplayed Kleinian's theory in the light of his experience of O and transformations in O. Freud's theory was also to a certain degree considered as a space-filler in order not to be afraid of upcoming thoughts. A key idea from the first lectures is Bion's focus on the existence of a mind, personality and character. The supervisions in Brazil took place in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
