ABSTRACT

This chapter considers a number of areas of inquiry. Part of my purpose is to provide a framework within which what Pope Francis has accomplished in Laudato Si’ can be considered. It highlights in particular the question of whether a religion recognizes the nature and extent of the environmental crisis, sets out to inculcate an appreciation of its nature in its adherents, and encourages them to respond appropriately. The challenge that confronts the religions is to play all of the roles mentioned—those that have to do with resources and those that have to do with accomplishments. There are certain steps that can be taken by leaders, and what Pope Francis has done is exemplary in this regard. Laudato Si’ is a challenge to all members of the Church: it specifies a path and calls all members of the Church to take it. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
