ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to outline some of the available research on pilot retirement, reflect on some input from pilots who have retired or are about to do so, as well as propose some ideas and intentions for further studies. Health is a concern for pilots through their career, as the risk of “loss of licence” due to a medical condition also may mean “loss of career”. Many pilots will be able to provide accounts of the effects of shift work, such as tiredness, fatigue, stress and other related factors with potentially negative effect. For every story about a pilot who is hanging around the flying club to talk to other pilots and to be close to aircraft, there is at least one about a colleague who did his last landing and rarely or never seemed to care much about flying again.
