ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the Practitioner Plenary Panel held at the International Symposium on Aviation Psychology in May of 2017. The practitioner panelists were invited to articulate their operational challenges and to inform the aviation community of their vision of a more efficacious aviation system. The Commercial Aviation Safety Team has developed many safety enhancements, and the Human-centered operating principles initiative could fit their proactive mandate. Any conversation regarding human factors in aviation maintenance would not be complete without understanding the differences in aircraft maintenance between depot-level maintenance and line maintenance. Wind, snow, rain, and darkness of night, remote locations far removed from immediate logistical support, are many of the challenges faced by line aviation maintainers. The technology is advancing so fast, it is a concern that too many decisions and actions in aviation may leave out the human altogether.
