ABSTRACT
The origins and conceptual definitions of the words handedness, asymmetry, chirality, and helicity are provided. The confusions prevailing in the use of these words are clarified. Although these words are used interchangeably and although some order was established by Palmer (2005), subtle differences that exist between them are highlighted. The evolutionary significance of these concepts is also discussed.
