ABSTRACT

We begin with an outline of how the book is organised before providing a glossary of key words that enable students to distinguish between meanings (e.g. variable and value, sample and population). We review the arithmetic and numerical skills that underpin any study of business analytics, quantitative methods and statistics. These include the use of sigma notation, powers, precedence of operations (BODMAS), rounding and approximation, significant figures and decimal places. We end the chapter with guidance on the use of software, specifically the pros and cons of using Excel compared to specialist software like Minitab and SPSS.
