ABSTRACT

Immunology has come a long way since a number of ways of reasoning: typically, the idea that the acid test for any new idea must be its impact or feasibility on the making of vaccines. This test may also be applied to the idiotype network and, sure enough, the idiotypic internal image has been proposed for use as vaccine in cases where antigen is too dangerous to handle or too difficult to obtain in reasonable quantities. The chapter outlines a strategy to understand which are the relevant HD for internal image antigen vaccine. With the exception of T-independent molecules, most protein antigens need to utilize several rounds of "cell cooperation" in the development of a full-fledged immune response. T-cell help is necessary both in the build up and in the elicitation of memory. During the primary response, specific helper T cells are principally stimulated by contact with antigen-presenting macrophages or dendritic cells.
