ABSTRACT

In June 1992, I was traveling through Tokyo and stopped to visit an old friend, Mingzi. When I told her I was writing a book about the Cultural Revolution, she suggested, I interview a friend of hers in Beijing, Zhanhua. Mingzi warned me not to interview Zhanhua at home. "You need to watch out for her mother," she said. "She doesn't like pretty women like you. You should get Zhanhua to tell you why."
