ABSTRACT
I first met Linbin in the office of his uncle, an official in the Ministry of Culture, whom I interviewed in 1983 while I was a reporter with the Xinhua News Agency. Linbin's dark eyes and red cheeks make him look like a cute boy. If he had not been smoking and had shaved more carefully, the image would have been complete.
