ABSTRACT
The newspaper where Zhanmei works is located in a commercial center in Beijing. When I arrived at the main entrance, I found that the street was barred to through traffic of all kinds. The guards there were only allowing bicycles and automobiles to enter if the drivers or riders were employed inside the center. By the time I rode around to the visitor's gate, I was thirty minutes late for my appointment.
