ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with the personal views on the future of the particle physics-cosmology interface. Speculation about the future is often preceded by a review of the path to the present; by taking a few steps back it is possible to get a running start for the leap into the future. In contrasting the past with the present, the most striking difference is one of attitude. Prior to the mid-1960's, twentieth-century cosmologists were hampered time and time again by a lack of confidence in their own sound theoretical predictions, which led to numerous missed opportunities. Shortly after Einstein introduced the field equations in 1915, he constructed the first modern cosmological models. The importance of physics input to cosmology is well illustrated by a simple, although somewhat dated, example. The focus has turned to the application of the most and often still very speculative-ideas in modern particle theory to the earliest moments of the Universe.
