ABSTRACT

The "general nature" of the five principles allowed both Sukarno, in his later years, and his successor, Suharto, to use the Pancasila to support their authoritarian power and to promote their political agenda. The principles are: nationalism. internationalism, representative government, social justice, and belief in God. There are two millions of youths, whose single slogan is: "A Free Indonesia, Now". If, for instance, at this very moment the Japanese forces were to transfer state responsibilities to us, then we would not hold back for one minute, we would at once accept these responsibilities, we would at once begin with the independent Indonesian state! The principle of Gotong Rojong between the rich and the poor, between the Moslem and the Christian, between those not originating from Indonesia and their children who become Indonesians. The struggle, however, must be of a different nature from what we have been carrying on so far.
