ABSTRACT
The path integral approach to string theory was revitalized by A.M. Polyakov in 1981, using a sum-over-surfaces viewpoint that maintains manifest Lorentz, reparametrization, and conformal invariance. The details of this classic calculation are the topic of this chapter.
