ABSTRACT

E ven a first-time visitor to Varanasi will see this ancient city’s multifaceted history—the structure of a wealthy commercial and manufacturing center (that Hindus call artha), the trappings of lifetimes spent enjoying leisure (kama), the accumulated traditions of many religions (dharma), and the devotion to the ultimate goal of individual enlightenment (moksha). And a frequent visitor will recognize even greater complexity of global influences.
