ABSTRACT

Whenever engaging an enemy in battle, if you are numerous while they are few, you should select level, easy, broad, and expansive terrain for the engagement in order to be victorious. If you are five times the enemy's strength, then three-fifths of your forces should execute orthodox tactics and two-fifths should implement unorthodox ones. If you are three times the enemy's strength, two-thirds of your forces should execute orthodox tactics and one-third should implement unorthodox ones. This is what is referred to as one segment opposing their front while another attacks their rear. A tactical principle from the Questions and Replies states: "One who doesn't divide when he should divide entangles the army."
