Whenever engaging an enemy in warfare, you should secretly await the appearance of discord among their rulers and ministers, for then you can dispatch spies in order to estrange them further. If a ruler and his subordinates become mutually suspicious and doubtful of each other, you can employ elite troops to exploit the opportunity and inevitably gain your desires. A tactical principle from the Art of War states: "If they are united, cause them to be separated."
