ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes a way of operating, in the arena of gender relations, which continues the process of challenging patriarchal practices and ways of thinking. The process is referred to as "partnership accountability", to stress the spirit of equity which it entails and to separate this concept from older, often hierarchical, ideas about accountability. The chapter explores the author's own experiments and experiences with partnership accountability which has been developing for a number of years. The model which The Family Centre proposes goes beyond a simple concept to a practical tool. The model is built on the understanding that the dominant group on any issue, be it race, sex or social position, are accountable to the least powerful. The issue of accountability and gender has become more topical and more clearly pressing now that issue of men's violence toward women are being examined at a broader social level.
