ABSTRACT

In this chapter the author explores his own experiences of schooling. He draws various theoretical works based on school. The chapter describes the framework of the sessions that Sydney Men Against Sexual Assault (MASA) run in schools. It outlines possible future directions for such work, and invites schools to take on the broader responsibilities involved in order to adequately address issues of gender and violence. Within the author's school there existed three key masculinities: the "cools", the "squares", and the "poofs", and a great diversity of others, some of which were defined primarily by racial or class backgrounds, with still others defined by particular sporting preferences and skills. Despite such diversity, there was also clearly a dominant, hegemonic masculinity - that of the "cools". Gender theory in education circles seem to indicate that there will be many openings for women and men to begin to work in partnership on issues of gender and violence.
