ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the story of Jeff, Steve and Peter. The author's work requires a continuing balance between establishing processes of accountability and practices which are respectful towards the men who are his clients. Neither Jeff, Steve, nor Peter would have made themselves available for intervention in the absence of external pressures or mandates to attend. Peter's attendance in therapy was of course initially coerced by his parents and by a Children's Court mandate. Peter was required to live separately from his family to ensure safety and respect for his sister. Peter was eventually able to express his grief, his hurt, and his shame, both for himself and for his sister, as he travelled on a journey towards respect. To assist and witness this young man embarking on this journey - moving towards respect - was a highly moving privilege for the author as a therapist: an experience which also assisted his own journey towards the discovery of respect.
