ABSTRACT
The author's work as an educator has led him to consider the different ways they can look at intolerance of gay men, lesbians, and bisexual people. This chapter discusses one part of a wider debate that challenges all values and prejudices emanating from a dominant culture that is intolerant of difference. The heterosexual dominance understanding is marked by a curiosity to comprehend the cultural and social context of the injustice. One of the insights gained by many who do homosexuality is to appreciate the constant and daily nature of censorship and disqualification for gay men, lesbians, and bisexual people. Australian culture responds to homosexuality. Changes rarely occur without reactions that strive to maintain the status quo. Homosexuality has long been condemned as a threat to the traditional family. The general cultural and economic imperatives and institutions have either ignored them, discriminated against them, or starting to woo them.
