ABSTRACT
My conscious experience of male culture goes back to my schooling at a single sex boys’ school, with a heavy emphasis on very stereotypical masculine roles, encapsulated in attitudes to women and men’s dominance over them, and in aggressive interactions between students. This stereotype was reinforced at every turn, in the classroom, on the ovals, and in the social relationships between the boys, where homophobia, not surprisingly, was rife.
