ABSTRACT

A good thermometer is a reliable indicator of one aspect of its environment. Imagine one that gives voice to its readings. You look at it; you raise your eyebrows, questioningly. It responds, saying what the temperature is. Does it know what the temperature is? If you say no, because you assume that thermometers lack beliefs, will you credit humans who have beliefs, and who are otherwise like good thermometers, with having knowledge? Do you have any less evidence for a thermometer's knowing what the temperature is than you have for a friend's knowing what the temperature is?
