ABSTRACT

This part conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters. The part explores the usefulness of ‘type’ in terms of diplomacy by posing a basic question to six experts, essentially asking them to apply the concept to their own area: What is the history of each type of diplomacy? It investigates the ways different worldviews affect the practices that become diplomacies of place. The part examines types over time and diplomacies of place at specific points in history, it is possible to make at least four observations about diplomacy in the past that will help us craft a more global diplomacy for the future. It shows that ‘grand strategy’ is a particularly American phrase. The part develops models for the interaction of different states-systems that help visualize the ways in which entities at different levels of development or different historical and cultural perspectives operate.
