ABSTRACT

Agriculture in Bremer, at one level, is characterized well by concepts of the mass society. Mass production methods are used to grow a single major commodity on virtually all of the farms. The farmers followed community values by making the information available to everyone. In the community-control era one would expect to find the farmers relying upon one another for advice and directions on how to use a new method of farming. Although the farmers in Bremer make a good living, the escalating land prices in the 1970s made it difficult for family members to pay the other family members what the land was worth. Particularism prevails in decisions, even the enforcing of compliance with the mass-society-oriented government farm programs. As a way of life the daily interaction patterns of the agricultural producers in Bremer have remained rooted in the norm that the good of the group is paramount.
