ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with how the residents of Bremer see their Main Street. The outside of the businesses, many of which show the effects of the hot, dusty summer sun, reflect the town's name, most having "Bremer" written somewhere on their signs. The Bremer bank provides a striking example of the community's desire to maintain old ways while still providing local residents with modern banking services. The policy of the bank is to pay low interest rates on personal savings accounts and also to charge low interest rates on personal or business loans. Ninety percent of the business at the Hartford grocery store is conducted on a charge account system. The drugstore is on the corner across the street from the Bremer Hardware Store. Farm supplies such as fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides and services such as tire repair are also a major focus of business in Bremer. The Kholer Tractor Company is characteristic of other mass-society business operations.
