ABSTRACT

The exclusion of women from the community club raises important questions about the role of women in the community of Bremer. The Bremer calendar that hangs in most homes, sometimes stuck with magnets to the refrigerator next to drawings by children and recent photographs of family members, shows that June 7th is the Livingston's 21st anniversary. The ritual of elk hunting serves several functions within the Bremer community. The role of gender in the Bremer community illustrates the tradeoffs for maintaining community in the community-control era. Yet, in examining the total impact of change on gender, it is quite evident that in Bremer women's roles are changing while most men's are remaining static. Elk-hunting season provides a ritual that may help in examining gender differentiated roles. The role of women in the school extends from the traditional role of nurturer in the family.
