ABSTRACT

A woman who signs up to protect her country is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire.

—JANE HARMAN, California congresswoman, 2008

This chapter examines the ways in which particular features of institutions shape the violence against women, both intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexual assault, that is perpetrated by their members. We explore several institutions: the military, college campuses and fraternities, and “SportsWorld.” * We chose to focus on these institutions because they have high rates of violence against women and they share a set of common characteristics that facilitate this violence and allow it to continue. Objectives

To explicate the specific institutional qualities these institutions share

To explicate the processes inside these institutions that produce high rates of violence against women, both IPV and sexual assault

To provide data on rape and IPV in each of these institutions

To provide policy recommendations for reducing violence against women in these institutions
