ABSTRACT

Under the Republic of China's governance are Taiwan, more than a dozen smaller islands, and many islets that surround it and are considered geologically linked to it. The Republic of China also lays territorial claim to some of the Pratas Islands and Spratly Islands—in fact, the largest islands in both groups—located in the South China Sea, and maintains military forces on islands in both groups. If Taiwan and the other territory under the jurisdiction of the Republic of China were regarded as a province of China, it would be the People's Republic of China's second smallest province. Considering the large mountainous area in Taiwan that cannot be inhabited, Taiwan's population density may be said to exceed even that of Bangladesh. Taiwan's culture, for the most part, is of Chinese origins. The population of Taiwan has long depended upon roads as its main form of land transportation.
