ABSTRACT
John Maynard Keynes (1883–1946) became the dominant economist in the West between the two world wars. An "act" involves logically the following: It implies an agent, an "actor." For purposes of definition the act must have an "end," a future state of affairs toward which the process of action is oriented. It must be initiated in a "situation" of which the trends of development differ in one or more important respects from the state of affairs to which the action is oriented, the end. The selection, "The Sociology of Knowledge and Ideology," comprises revised portions of Mannheim's most famous book, Ideology and Utopia, which was first published in Germany in 1929. The fundamental event of the modern age is the conquest of the world as picture. The word "picture" now means the structured image that is the creature of man's producing which represents and sets before.
