ABSTRACT

The Somoza amassed a huge fortune while the gap between the nation's privileged and poor classes widened. By the mid-1970s many Nicaraguans, enraged by the greed and brutality of the regime, were willing to temporarily set aside their differences and unite in a revolution. Nicaragua is about the size of New York State and had 5,788,531 residents in 2013. Taking the name of the nationalist hero Augusto Cesar Sandino for their movement, Sandinista Front for National Liberation (FSLN) organizers intended to rid the country of the Somoza and launch a social revolution to redistribute resources to the poor and create a society without extremes of wealth and poverty.
