ABSTRACT

During the war in Asia, as in Europe, the Communists achieved a prominent place in the resistance movements against Axis occupation. However, in Europe the Communists were unable to use their prestige in the resistance to obtain power, except in Yugoslavia; in all the other satellites Communist regimes were installed by Soviet troops. As in the European satellites, in China it can scarcely be said that there was any period comparable to that of War Communism. In China a civil war preceded the Communists' assumption of control of the national government, in contrast to Russia where it came afterward. The establishment of Communist power in China was regarded by the Soviets and other Communists as a great victory. In Korea and Manchuria the Soviets accepted the Japanese surrender without incident, but they promptly became involved in the effort to spread Communist control in those areas.
