Opportunities for an attempt on Adolf Hitler's life were therefore sharply limited. Only someone who could manage to get himself invited to one of the night time gatherings or who had access to the military conferences in the morning had any chance at all. During Hitler's inspection, the officer was to set off the bomb hidden under the uniform, throw his arms around Hitler, and blow up both himself and the dictator. The demonstration of the uniform was scheduled several times in the fall of 1943, but each time Hitler cancelled the visit, almost as if he had some premonition of what was awaiting him. Hitler's orders to hold existing positions at all costs prepared the way for the great successes of the Russian army. In view of the German military situation, Germany's allies began to waver.
